One of the first questions that many new WLED users might find themselves asking is: Which ESP32 should I use for WLED? You probably already know that the ESP32 is a small but powerful microcontroller, with wireless capability. Basically a tiny computer that can run simple programs, like WLED. With different variations of ESP32 boards available, it can be difficult to choose the right one. While a generic, low-cost ESP32 module might seem like an easy choice, there are a few things that you need to know going into running WLED on an ESP32, as well as a couple of downsides.
Understanding ESP32 and WLED
WLED is an open-source project that allows you to control addressable LED strips using a Wi-Fi-enabled microcontroller, namely the ESP32. The older ESP8266 was used previously, but isn’t recommended for new builds and won’t be supported by WLED moving forward. The ESP32 is a powerful chip with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, making it ideal for smart LED control. However, not all ESP32 boards are created equal, and using a board that lacks proper optimizations can lead to frustrating performance issues.
Common ESP32 Boards for WLED
When searching for an ESP32 to run WLED, you’ll come across a few common choices:
- ESP32-WROOM-32 – One of the most widely used modules. It’s affordable and widely supported but requires additional components for optimal LED control.
- ESP32-WROVER – Similar to the WROOM but with more RAM, which can help for advanced WLED effects.
- ESP32-C3 – A very small RISC-V-based chip that is power-efficient but lacks the same level of community support as the standard ESP32. Can be a good choice when small form factor is essential.
- ESP32-S2/S3 – Offers more I/O and USB support but is not always fully compatible with all WLED features.
Each of these options will run WLED, and can often be purchased for a pretty low price from common online marketplaces like AliExpress or Amazon. We recommend finding a version that has USB-C for connecting to the board. Some boards still use the extremely outdated micro-USB, which we’d suggest avoiding. No one wants to go digging around for that old micro-USB cable you haven’t used in 5 years.
Pros and Cons of Using a Basic ESP32 for WLED
While a generic ESP32 board can technically run WLED, there are both advantages and disadvantages to using one.
Pros of Using a Basic ESP32:
- Affordable – Basic ESP32 boards are cheap and widely available.
- Widely Supported – Since WLED is built for ESP32, most modules will be relatively simple to install WLED onto.
- Can Be a Fun DIY Project – Learning how to take a simple cheap board and make cool lighting effects with one can be a fun project and a good introduction into basic circuitry and DIY electronics.
Cons of Using a Basic ESP32:
A basic, cheap ESP32 board will work for running basic WLED lights and effects, though there are definitely some downsides that you should be aware of.
- No Logic Level Shifting – ESP32 runs at 3.3V logic, but most LED strips require 5V. Without a level shifter on the data output, you may experience flickering or complete failure. Unless your LEDs are extremely close to the ESP32, you will need to purchase a separate level shifter and connect it to your ESP board. Even wiring the LEDs extremely close isn’t guaranteed to work.
- Limited Power Handling – Basic ESP32 boards don’t include optimized power circuitry, which can lead to voltage drops, crashes, and LED instability. Often a step-down converter will be required to run your lights and ESP32 off of the same power supply, as an ESP32 requires a 5V input, and many modern LEDs will need 12V or 24V.
- Complicated Setup – You may need to add extra additional components, solder connections, and troubleshoot issues before everything works reliably. Many users will need to buy a breadboard and jumper wires to connect their accessories to their ESP32.
ESP32 vs. Dedicated WLED Controllers
The ESP32 can be great for DIY-ers and electronic enthusiasts. However, for the optimal WLED experience we’d recommend using a dedicated WLED controller for long-term use. Even the most complex of ESP32 setups with many accessories will likely still not have the same reliability, functionality, and safety features of a board that’s designed specifically to run WLED and drive complex LED setups. If you’re looking for a simple DIY solution, an ESP32-WROOM-32 or similar basic board will work, but it comes with challenges that users, especially new users, should be aware of. And while the cost can seem lower to begin with, it will require additional accessories such as a breadboard, jumper wires, level shifters, and more, which quickly balloon the cost.
